30-day language challenge: a day-by-day plan

A 30-day language challenge is a commitment to practise a language every day for a month. A good plan mixes daily vocabulary, one short game or quiz, listening practice, and a weekly speaking or writing task, with a review day each week. QuackPath’s free Weekly Challenge gives you a ready-made daily game in 15 languages.

Key points

Before you start

Pick one language and one goal you can check at the end of the month, such as “order food and introduce myself” or “read a short news article with a dictionary”. Choose a time of day and a source of material you like: a podcast, a series, articles, songs. Keep the daily session short enough that you will not skip it.

The daily formula

Every day: review the words that are due, learn a few new words from your material, play one short game or quiz, and listen to something in the language for a few minutes. On days when you are busy, do only the review and the game. The point of the challenge is that no day is zero.

Week by week

Week 1 — foundations: greetings, numbers, the most common verbs, and the sounds of the language. Week 2 — everyday life: food, places, time, simple questions; write three sentences about your day. Week 3 — real content: pick one article or song and turn it into vocabulary; try a short conversation or voice message. Week 4 — use it: describe your week, retell a story you read, and review everything from the month on day 30.

After day 30

Look back at your goal, keep the daily habit, and choose a slightly harder goal for the next month. Most of the value of a 30-day challenge is the habit it leaves behind.

Run a 30-day language challenge

  1. Week 1: foundations. Learn greetings, numbers, the most common verbs and the sounds of the language. Review daily and play one short game.
  2. Week 2: everyday life. Learn words for food, places and time, ask simple questions, and write three sentences about your day.
  3. Week 3: real content. Turn one article or song into a vocabulary list and study it; record a short voice message or have a short conversation.
  4. Week 4: use it. Describe your week, retell something you read, and review everything from the month on day 30.

How QuackPath helps

QuackPath can provide the daily pieces of the plan: turn your chosen material into a personal course, review it in short sessions, and play the free daily game in the Weekly Challenge in 15 languages. Streaks in the app show how many days in a row you have practised.

Play the free Weekly Challenge

The QuackPath Weekly Challenge is a free daily word game you can play right here in your browser, with no account. Most weeks bring a new puzzle every day, and the game itself changes every Sunday. In Hatch you guess the word of the day: after each guess, the tiles show which letters are in the right spot and which are in the word but somewhere else. In Flock you sort 16 words into four groups, in Echo you hear a sentence and rebuild it, and in Dash you fill in the gaps against the clock. Pick one of 15 languages: your own or the one you are learning. Scoreboards, friends and streaks live in the QuackPath app.

How to play

Hatch: guess the hidden word

Type a word that fills every tile and send it. After each guess, a purple tile with a dot means the letter is in the right spot, an orange ring means it is in the word but in another spot, and a grey tile means it is not in the word. Every guess must be a real word, and after 3 tries a hint can show the meaning for a few points. In the English puzzle, words are currently 4 to 6 letters long and you get 6 tries.

Flock: sort 16 words into 4 groups

Find four groups of four among 16 words. Tap four words that belong together, then send them. Each group has its own colour, from easy to tricky, and “One away” means three of your four belong together. You can make 4 mistakes. Hold a word to hear it, and every group you find is labelled in your language.

Echo: listen and rebuild the sentence

Tap the speaker to hear a sentence; the first listen is free. Then tap the words in the order you heard them, and tap a placed word to take it back. You have 3 checks for each sentence. A replay, a slow replay and each word in the wrong place cost a few points, so listen closely before you tap.

Dash: fill the gaps against the clock

Tap the word that fits the gap, and the next sentence comes at once. The race lasts 90 seconds and keeps running even if you leave the page, and a wrong answer costs 2 seconds. Right answers in a row build a combo, and your best combo adds points. Finish with enough right answers to solve the puzzle.

Learning a language?

Keep the menus in English and play the puzzle in the language you are learning. The words come from QuackPath’s course vocabulary. In Hatch, the hint shows the word’s meaning in English, and in Flock every group you find is labelled in English.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 30-day language challenge?

A commitment to practise a language every day for 30 days, usually with a simple daily routine and weekly goals.

How much time do I need each day?

Ten to thirty minutes is enough. On busy days a short review and one game still count.

What if I miss a day?

Continue the next day. The goal is the habit, not a perfect record.

Can I do the challenge for free?

Yes. You can use free material, and the QuackPath Weekly Challenge games are free in the browser.
